Karmenu Muscat, Victim Of Tragic Bus Accident, Was A Maltese Olympian

Karmenu Muscat, the driving instructor who died in a tragic accident at the Floriana Park and Ride yesterday, was once a Maltese Olympian.
As a cyclist, Karmenu represented Malta at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, competing in the individual road race and team trial events.
Then 18 years old, he was one of eight athletes to represent Malta at the Games in the then Soviet Union.
According to the MOC’s website, Malta finished 20th out of 23 nations in the team trials, finishing ahead of Libya, Cameroon, and Ethiopia.
The individual event was a particularly tough one, and out of 161 cyclists who started the race, only 52 finished, none of whom were from the Maltese contingent.
Karmenu tragically died yesterday after he was caught between a bus and a wall.
Malta Public Transport paid tribute to him, stating he was not only a dedicated and experienced driving instructor, but also one of the most trusted persons in the public transport community.
“He was respected and looked up to by many for his patience, professionalism, and dedication,” they said.
“His absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew him. Karmenu’s legacy will live on through the many people he mentored with his guidance and support.”
