It’s become something of a routine for the Labour Party to beat the Nationalist Party at elections but it beat its old foes at a different kind of game yesterday.
MPs from both sides of the House faced each other at a five-a-side football game at the Marsa Sports Complex in aid of Puttinu Cares.
Team PL lined up with Anthony Agius Decelis in goal and Alex Muscat, Aaron Farrugia, Silvio Schembri, Carmelo Abela and Byron Camilleri as the alternating outfield players.
Fighting for the Nationalists was Robert Cutajar in goal, with Jason Azzopardi, Karl Gouder, David Agius, Claudio Grech, and Ryan Callus making up the rest of the squad.
Team PN was hoping to cause an upset and at one point even brought their manager, Opposition leader Adrian Delia, to cheer them on from the sidelines. However, it was Team PL who seized the advantage, with Farrugia, Schembri and Muscat all netting, with Agius scoring a consolation goal for the PN.
The final score was 3-1 to PL, a comfortable victory but not too sobering for the PN, all things considered.
