LifeCycle Malta Finished Day One Of Their 2,000Km Trek Across South Africa To Raise Funds For Kidney Research
Ready. Set. Go!
The LifeCycle Challenge Malta 2024 has officially launched to help raise funds for kidney research and support renal patients.
The team from the LifeCycle Malta Foundation arrived in Gaborone, Botswana, on Sunday, 27th October, for their 10-day cycling trek up to the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.
The trek, aptly named the “Journey of Good Hope,” spans an impressive 2,000 kilometres and includes 20 participants.
After a night spent setting up their bikes and gear, the team set off, riding for at least five hours before calling it a day after completing 150 km, successfully crossing the border between Botswana and South Africa yesterday evening.
On Facebook, the LifeCycle team shared moments from their Day 1 journey: “The team braved windy weather, which added an extra challenge to the journey. Along the way, they were treated to beautiful landscapes and glimpses of local wildlife.”
According to LifeCycle’s website, renal (kidney) failure occurs when kidneys function at only 10-15% of their capacity. Causes of kidney failure can include diabetes, high blood pressure, and acute kidney injuries, among others.
People experiencing frequent fatigue, nausea, vomiting, swelling in the feet or arms, or changes in urination may be at risk of renal failure. However, treatment is possible through dialysis or kidney transplants.
Since 1999, LifeCycle has held annual challenges, raising nearly €4,000,000 with treks across 53 countries to raise awareness of kidney disease and support renal patients.
The journey couldn’t be possible without the help of Laferla Insurance to ensure the team’s safety and wellbeing.

Congratulations to the team on their trek so far, and good luck for what’s to come!
