This weekend’s Comic-Con brought the best of Malta’s pop subcultures altogether in one room. Amidst the awesome costumes, famous international authors, and literally one of the Power Rangers, was Andrew Bonett.

Dressed as a Roman Gladiator, Andrew had turned his wheelchair into a Roman Chariot – horse and all – and quickly became a hit within the MFCC in Ta’ Qali as people lined up to take pictures with him.

“By sheer coincidence on Friday Andrew was watching a cartoon about gladiators and since he has always loved horses, he asked his father to build him a chariot,” Rachel, his mother, told Lovin Malta. “My husband Chris and Andrew spent Saturday afternoon making the chariot out of cardboard, and Andrew decided that his toy horse Sparky would pull it!”

Andrew and his sister Amy, who dressed in a NASA outfit, loved showing off their costumes in a room full of wonderful and weird cosplayers.

“Both Amy and Andrew had a blast at the Malta Comic Con,” she said. “They’ve attended for the past three years but this year ended up being a special one.”
“Both kids love dressing up,” she continued. “Amy, who loves anything that has to do with the women of NASA, decided to cosplay as a female astronaut, especially after following the first all female spacewalk a few days ago. They were both very happy to be given the opportunity to go on stage and are proud of the medals they received – and they are already making plans to Cosplay next year.”

The Malta Comic Con 2019 featured some incredible outfits and costumes inspired by some of the biggest characters in modern comic and video game culture.
