Last year Matthew Brincat shared his harrowing personal account about living as an addict with Lovin Malta readers. Now more nuances of his inspiring journey unfold in his newly launched book of poetry and prose.

Brincat began writing the book while in rehab and continued to do so as he re-entered the community, drug-free, in 2014. The completed publication is now available to buy online and in some local book stores.

Random is a collection of poems, journal entries and musings written by Brincat throughout his journey through recovery. Its contents are boldly honest, but Brincat never planned to expose his innermost thoughts and experiences.

“I never thought of myself like this – being here, with these intimate texts that came to me, all gathered in a book,” he told us. “But here they are, exposed to everyone and anyone who is willing to view another reality – one that is ignored my many.”

If you’re expecting a tell-all memoir of life as an addict, you might want to look elsewhere. Brincat’s book is not that – it’s an introspective, personal collection that aims at inspiring “inner peace”.

“This book is focused on the freedom one finds beyond pain,” Brincat explains. “Because pain is the source of addiction.”

No, it’s not a self-help book either. “There is no guidance for actual help”, Brincat says. His book offers no tips or instruction, but a chance for readers to “find [themselves] and what actually goes unexpressed in each and everyone of us.”

“This book is focused on the freedom one finds beyond pain, because pain is the source of addiction.”

So what does Brincat hope the book’s impact will be?

Random is human, like each and every one of us. It has flaws – and they’re there to raise awareness about our judgment. See yourself while reading it. Observe the mind playing its judgmental game. Feel the uninterrupted flow of your heart. Go with that.”
