Maltese Legend Bertu Camilleri Celebrates 81st Birthday In His Iconic Għargħur Gym
Former Boxing champion and the man behind the iconic Bertu’s Gym in Għargħur, Bertu Camilleri, celebrated his 81st birthday in the gym which he built up into a national institution, surrounded by family and friends.
The heartfelt celebration honoured Bertu, a local legend whose passion for fitness and boxing continues to leave a lasting mark on the community.
Open for almost 43 years, what started as a small initiative quickly grew into one of Malta’s pioneering fitness hubs.
On the 40th anniversary of the gym’s opening, Lovin Malta, along with Videocafe, produced a documentary: Bertu– A Story Of Gym, Boxing And Community, which laid out all the notable moments in Bertu’s life, boxing career and his well-loved gym.
Bertu himself was trained by an array of top athletes in the field, including the late Iron Man of Europe, Charles Saliba, along with a couple of boxing and bodybuilding champions.
Despite the gym’s broad success, boxing has always remained closest to Camilleri’s heart. His hands-on approach and dedication to mentoring young talent have shaped generations of athletes and left an enduring impact on the local sports scene.
Even today, visitors to Bertu’s Gym are always welcomed by Camilleri’s warm presence and trademark smile, a reminder that the space is more than just a gym; it’s a true community.
