Maltese Mother’s Handcrafted ‘Guardian Angels’ Are Fighting Mental Health Issues While Raising Money For Charity
More and more people are becoming aware of just how serious mental health issues can be, and one woman in Mosta has gone beyond the call of duty to try and support those who feel alone.
Stacey Abela, founder of My Melts and a mother of four, created the My Angels Initiative as a way of reminding people that there’s always someone there for them, no matter how low they are feeling – and she’s already raised over a €1,000 for charity.
“As a parent and an adult I wanted to make a difference – call it part of my bucket list,” she smiles. “I had these lovely little handmade angels at My Melts and after hearing of the loss of a friend I thought, ‘that is what I was going to do’.”
Stacey has created the companion Angels, with all proceeds going to the Richmond Foundation. They are a physical representation of your guardian angel that you can hold with you close and carry with you wherever you go.
The Angels are physical representations of your guardian angel
Stacey’s personal experience losing a family member to mental health issues are part of the reason she wanted to offer support to those in need.
“This is an issue very close to my heart as I have lived with family members who needed assistance… but it was too late for them. I lost my cousin back in 2003 at the age of 25, and within the past two years two other young men I knew also took their lives because life got too hard for them,” she says.
That’s why she’s trying to get these Angels into the hands of those who need them.
“The meaning of this angel is to be placed where others can see them so if they are going though somewhat of a hard time, they may spot the Angel and realise that they are not alone,” she beams.
She’s teamed up with local companies to get the Angels out there
“I have been contacted by a couple of other businesses that have helped me sell them. Head to Shoez, Jocob’s Brew – Pay It Forward, Care Malta Villa Messina Rabat and soon to be at Ann’s Van Ta’ Xbiex,” she said.
And she’s already raised over €1,000 for the Richmond Foundation
“We handed over €1,040 last month – but doesn’t even start next to the work the people at Richmond Foundation do for our community,” she said.
