Ryan Tonna, a 36-year-old police constable, has tragically died after choking on his food at a Pisa restaurant, moments after completing a marathon in the Italian city.

Tonna, who used to work in The Drugs Squad, was reportedly dining with the rest of the Maltese contingent near the Piazza del Duomo when he stood up gasping for breath. Medics were called on site but their efforts to resuscitate him were in vain.

Several police officers have offered their condolences to Tonna, whose death comes a day after PC Alfred Sciberras passed away.

The Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation for first responders described Tonna as an exemplary officer whose change in lifestyle to an athletic one inspired many who do not believe in themselves as being capable of such a change.

“Although we still cannot believe such a loss, we know your inspiration will continue. Watch us from up there dear friend and colleague. Condolences to your loved ones.”
