Neil Agius ‘Already Feeling Very Cold’ As Long Night Swim Starts With Dark Gozo Channel Crossing

A long, dark and cold night lies ahead of Neil Agius, but for him and his team, this is exactly what they’ve been training for.

“Neil is already feeling very cold but the team have a game plan after yesterday’s experience,” an update from 11pm straight from the boat started. “He asked for coffee with oat milk so they’re pulling together to make him a hot coffee.”

“This is where the hours and hours of relentless training, both physical and mental, truly kick in,” the update continued. “This is where the Ocean Mindset techniques come into play. This is where the incredible agility and connection of this team show their full force.”

Neil left Mellieħa yesterday at 9am, and it’s been a crazy whirlwind time since then. Yesterday night, he completed his swim around Malta, tackling the deep and dark western coastline by swimming by places like Blue Grotto, Wied iż-Żurrieq, Filfla, Dingli Cliffs and eventually popular beaches like Għajn Tuffieħa and beyond. This morning, when Lovin Malta caught up with him some 24 hours after his departure, he was approaching Gozo.
Now, well past his halfway mark of 80 kilometres, Neil faces the Gozo Channel, his starting point of Għadira, and the rest of Malta’s eastern coast once more 👀

To make matters all that more complicated, a number of weather forecasts are predicting potential rain and thunder hitting the islands late tonight, potentially well into sunrise tomorrow.

“As they battle the elements, waves, pitch darkness and wind, think of them, believe in Neil as much as he has believed in the power to push our boundaries and take care of ourselves and our planet,” the update finished. “Thank you all for your messages of support, they will reach Neil and the team. Good night we will update you all tomorrow bright and early.”
