Police Investigating Alleged Intimidation Of Children At Żigużajg’s Gender Fluidity Play
Children’s Commissioner Antoinette Vassallo has asked the police to investigate the alleged harassment and intimidation of children by members of the Abba Party who attended a recent ŻiguŻajg play about gender fluidity.
ADPD candidate Mina Jack Tolu flagged the incident to Vassallo after attending ‘Gender Boss’ at Spazju Kreattiv on 18th March together with a friend and her young daughter.
“On entering Spazju Kreattiv I was shocked to be welcomed by a security guard who was stationed at the entrance to the studio where the play was being shown,” Tolu said.
“After the play and creative workshop I spoke to the team at Spazju Kreattiv, and asked them about the presence of security. They claimed it was necessary due to the presence at prior showings of members of Partit Abba, who also recorded the play and workshop and asked questions to the children present.”
The Commissioner for Children informed Tolu that they have referred this alleged incident to the police.
ADPD secretary general Ralph Cassar said the party is committed to a “just society with respect for diversity and pluralism”, and warned that “the far-right’s cancel culture has no place in such a society”
The play “Gender Boss” had previously drawn concern from Nationalist MP and culture spokesperson Julie Zahra, who questioned the involvement of experts in the development of the performance.
The play, targeted at 8-10-year-olds, explores the idea of gender fluidity in an extremely light context by encouraging the audience to imagine a world where they can be whoever they want to be.
Despite concerns, the Żigużajg festival, a government program of artistic events for children and families, continued with the production of Gender Boss. The play featured five performances, two for schools and three for the general public.
