A Maltese boy who has been stuck in hospital recovering for weeks got the surprise of his life when he returned to his first day back at school and found two of his beloved service dogs waiting for him.

Andrew Bonnet was returning to San Andrea School today where Ilio and Andy the service dogs were patiently awaiting him. Ilio was dressed up as a peach crayon, and Andy was dressed as a crayon box, as a nod to Andrew’s favourite book, The Day The Crayons Quit.

Andrew was over the moon to see the dogs and his old friends waiting for him in an entrance hall decorated with balloons – and it’s just the cutest thing ever!

“Andrew said that it was the best day ever and that it was an amazing welcome,” Rachel, his mother, told Lovin Malta today.

“He was discharged last week and he is so happy to be back to school with Ilio, Andy and all his friends.”

But the surprises weren’t over

After their fun entrance, Andrew’s classmates unveiled a second surprise.

“His classmates then met up with him and greeted him with a cake that had a picture of his favorite animals on it, a horse and a dog,” Rachel said. “After this, Andrew was taken to the school library where the school’s librarian read The Day The Crayons Quit and all his classmates were the crayons from the story, and so where Andy and Ilio.
