A 93-year-old Maltese woman known to many to be full of life and fun has passed away, leading to a number of emotional tributes from the men and women who knew her.

“Furta passes away at the age of 93, sure gonna miss her when I visit the home. R.I.P. Furta,” said comedian Joe Demicoli who would often spend time with the residents of the Dar Santa Marija care home in Sliema.

Furtunata Bugeja, known among her friends as il-Furta, had recently gone viral after a video of her dancing to a Joe Demicoli performance of a classic Maltese song was spread online.

During a part of the song that features lyrics about women lifting up their skirts, il-Furta promptly lifted her skirt, cementing her place as an icon of Maltese elders. While some people were scandalised by her dance moves, she just laughed and kept on dancing, and after her death, some well-wishers said she would continue to dance with the angels.

Furtunata was from Isla but lived in Qormi, though she spent a lot of her last months at the aforementioned care home. She leaves behind 12 children and 29 grandchildren.

Her funeral will occur tomorrow morning at 8:15 am at St George’s Church in Qormi, her home town.
