A young Maltese boy who suffers from Lupus has stolen the hearts of the Maltese people with an important lesson about forgiveness.
At three years old, Katriel Zahra got a stroke, making him unable to walk or speak. He also lost all his teeth due to infections related to his condition. Due to treatment, he even lost his hair, which was especially difficult to deal with since he wants to become a hairdresser when he grows up.
“I experienced a lot of bullying. They bully me because I’m short… they call me a duck. If my mouth is hurting, they say I don’t know how to speak. But I forgive them, even though the hurt remains,” he told Xarabank.
“Jesus says it’s better to forgive than to hurt those who are hurting you. I forgive. If you want to hurt me again you can, but I will continue to forgive. When you forgive, you feel happier and fresher.”
With impressive eloquence and clarity, Katriel also spoke out against racism, saying he could not understand why people bullied dark-skinned children and complained about refugees coming to Malta.
“I feel sad even when I see them making the journey, let alone knowing that they have drowned,” he said.
Asked whether he questions why his illness chose him instead of someone else, he said: “”I say better me than someone else because I know how to fight it and maybe there are other people who wouldn’t know how.”
The interview is being used to promote Malta’s annual charity telethon L-Istrina, which will be held the day after Christmas.
