Uber Cab Driver Confused After Receiving Fine For Being ‘Improperly Dressed’ At Malta Airport

An Uber cab driver has expressed his confusion after a Transport Malta official fined him for being “improperly dressed” while driving past at the Malta International Airport.

Arthur Izuakor told Lovin Malta that he had just dropped a passenger off at the airport when an enforcement official approached him and asked for his cab driver tag.

Izuakor said that he did so and the official proceeded to fine him for being “improperly dressed”, even though he was wearing a regular outfit – a white T-shirt and blue shorts.

The ‘offence’ was marked in the ‘Other’ section on the ticket, with the words “improperly dressed” written in the address section.

The driver said that the traffic officer didn’t tell him how much he will be fined and he has yet to receive further official communication about it, but he intends to challenge it.

He even asked a passer-by at the airport to take a photo of him as evidence of what he was wearing at the time.

Izuakor has been left confused by the situation, stating that he is a self-employed driver and that Uber never gave him a dress code.

“I would have understood if it was a case of indecent exposure but you can’t say that I was improperly dressed in a T-shirt and knee-level shorts,” he said.

“If my passengers think I’m not properly dressed, they will complain to my employer but I don’t know how traffic officers have become fashion police,” he said.

“Similarly, if I pick up a passenger and act rudely, the passenger can’t report me to a traffic officer but he can write a bad review or complain to my officer.”

Izuakor also warned he was a victim of double standards, stating that he has seen other cab drivers wearing shorts much shorter than the pair he was wearing when he was fined.

Questions sent to Transport Malta earlier this week requesting a clarification on the law stipulating the dress code cab drivers should adhere to remain unanswered as of the time of writing.
