‘Wasal Il-Ġenna’: Peppi Azzopardi Pens Emotional Poem To Late Artist Mark Mallia
Peppi Azzopardi has written a heartfelt poem to Mark Mallia, the popular artist who suddenly passed away yesterday.
His poem goes like this:
Mark wasal il-ġenna
Fil-kju ma’ ħafna erwieħ
Nixtieq li nara ‘il Kristu
Imqar kemm impinġih
Lil Kristu pinġih jidħaq
Kif ma konna qatt rajnieh
San Pietru tgħidx kemm għoġbu
Qallu, “il-veru ġie tal-bliegħ”
San Pietru bagħat lill-Papa
Qallu din vera importanti
Għamlu kopji tat-tpinġija
Użawha flok is-santi.
U fuq kull kopja tat-tpinġija
mal-ġenb iktbu Mark Mallia
Translated to English it reads:
Mark has arrived in heaven
In a queue with many souls
I would like to see Christ
At least just to paint him
He painted Christ laughing
As we have never seen him before
St Peter liked it so much
He told him “how amazing this is”
St Peter sent it to the Pope
He told him this is really important
Use it instead of the holy pictures
And on every copy of the image
Write down Mark Mallia’s name
Mark, known for his abstract and portrait paintings, was hospitalised recently after an artery in his brain burst. He was placed on life support but unfortunately passed away yesterday.
From family members and fellow artists to politicians and activists, several people shared their memories of the artist and expressed their shock at his sudden passing.
Lovin Malta extends its deepest condolences to Mark’s family and loved ones.
