Watch: 11-Year-Old Gwen Decorates Hundreds Of Her Homemade Figolli, Raising Money For Puttinu Cares
11-year-old Gwen Gravina has baked and delivered hundreds of figolli all across Malta in a bid to raise money for Puttinu Cares.
In a Facebook live, the young yet highly mature girl can be seen painting her delicious-looking Easter treats with a rich chocolate spread as her mother packs those that have cooled down, to get them ready for delivery.
Gwen started this initiative four years ago, she kneads, freezes, and bakes daily during holiday seasons all to help young children in need.
In fact, just last Christmas, she raised €4,574 for Puttinu Cares after baking 715 figolli in only six weeks.
Gwen ran through the process of making and delivering these figolli.
First things first, she needs to contact all sponsors and make sure they’re on board before she can start advertising and start taking orders.
Then, the baking process begins.
First, she prepares the dough and makes the filling, then she fills the figolli and sends them off in the oven that she was given by Crosscraft which helps her bake many at one go.
Then, she starts adding chocolate and sprinkles to the top of the traditional dessert before packing them to get to her favourite step: sharing them with everyone.
“One of my favourite parts is giving them out and then giving the donation to Puttinu Cares,” she said.
All of the proceeds she makes from selling these figolli will go to the charity.
Gwen went on to say that she doesn’t post these videos to boast about her figolla know-how. It’s actually quite the opposite, “we love to learn and we love for you guys to teach us.”
She even referred to a hack one commenter had given her: to grate the lemons instead of peeling them.
“I strongly believe that you never stop learning in life and everything can teach you something.”
All this baking is undoubtedly hard work, but Gwen’s mother admitted that the pair’s biggest sacrifice is having to constantly smell the mouth-watering pastries but not being able to eat them. In fact, they only ate one figolla out of hundreds and it was the tester!
“Each one we make is for the people and Puttinu.”
Last weekend she delivered her first two batches to customers in the North and the South, and this week, she’ll be working on batches three and four so be sure to follow her on Instagram and Facebook for daily delicious updates.
The figolli are all sold out so, if you’re interested in trying them you may have to wait a while. Gwen even said that after these six weeks are up, she’s due a mother-daughter massage.
Well done Gwen!
