Watch: After A Sold-Out Run, ‘Il-Każin Tal-Imqarbin’ Seeks Support For Its Return To The Stage
After a successful and sold-out run at Valletta’s Campus Theatre, Saydon Studio’s powerful musical Il-Każin tal-Imqarbin is looking for support to bring the production back to life in the near future.
The show, which captivated audiences with its moving portrayal of 1980s Malta, particularly the struggles of the queer community during the AIDS epidemic, became one of the most talked-about and praised productions of 2024.
The heartfelt musical, which touched on themes of loss, resilience, and identity, had an overwhelming response from audiences. Many were left in tears, acknowledging that it was one of the best Maltese productions they had ever seen.
From laughter to sorrow, the emotional rollercoaster left a lasting impression, with rave reviews flooding in even before the final performance.
Luke Saydon, the writer behind the production, on behalf of Saydon Studio, took to social media to thank everyone who supported the show.

“Our hearts are full, and we are so grateful for all the love that audiences have shown toward this production,” Luke shared.
“We really believe in these stories, and we wanted to celebrate these people through this production. Your words mean a lot to me as a writer and to us as a team. We do not wish for our journey with Il-Każin tal-Imqarbin to end here.”
While the production’s initial run sold out quickly, Saydon has received numerous requests for additional performances, a release of the soundtrack, and even the publication of the script.
“We’ve had so many requests for more shows, and we believe in the power of this story,” Saydon explained. “We would love nothing more than to stage it again, here in Malta.”
However, Saydon acknowledged that the road ahead is not easy. “The theatre industry is tough, and we are a group of independent artists doing what we love. But we cannot make this happen without the support of others.”
Saydon Studio is now reaching out to potential sponsors, partners, and organisations who may have been touched by the show to help bring Il-Każin tal-Imqarbin back to the stage.
“If you’re someone who believes in the importance of this story and its message, we invite you to start a conversation with us. We want to work together to make this happen,” Saydon urged.
Il-Każin tal-Imqarbin has been hailed as a groundbreaking and essential piece of theatre. The show’s focus on the impact of the AIDS epidemic on the queer community in Malta, a topic often left in the shadows, resonated deeply with audiences.
The show’s talented cast, including Luke Saydon himself, Jamie Cardona , Ryan Grech , Raphael Pace and Josette Ciappara brought the story to life with powerful performances.
With an original musical score arranged by Matteo Depares and Aleandro Spiteri and an emotional stage design by Andrew Borg Wirth, the production captivated audiences in a way that only theatre can.
Despite being a relatively new production, it has already earned a place in the hearts of many, leaving people wanting more.
If you would like to help make the return of Il-Każin tal-Imqarbin a reality, Saydon Studio is inviting you to reach out. Whether you’re an individual who believes in the importance of the production or an organisation that wants to support the arts, your help will be essential to continue the legacy of this show.
If you know anyone who can help, whether through sponsorship or other support, please contact Saydon Studio at [email protected] or send them a message on social media.
