Watch: Beaten To A Pulp Outside Ta’ Xbiex Karaoke Bar, Cab Driver Is Seeking Justice

A Filipino cab driver who was viciously beaten up outside a karaoke bar in Ta’ Xbiex last May is still seeking some kind of justice some four months on from the assault.

Last May, Reylan Flores was partying with friends at the bar when he fell foul of another group of Filipino nationals. His friend warned him that the men were seriously angry at him for having blocked the door to the bar and were talking about attacking him.

Reylan ordered a cab but, as he was waiting, the group followed him, jumped him and beat him up.

“They punched my face, and when I fell to the floor, they kicked my body and one of them tried to choke me but some of my friends stopped them,” he told Lovin Malta.

One of his friends was stabbed in the fight too, an incident that made the news back then. The stabber has since been arrested and charged.

However, Reylan said that although filed a police report, showed them his medical certificate, and provided the names of his assailants, the police were unable to trace them.

He found this baffling as he has personally seen these men on the streets on a number of occasions since the fight, while working as a cab driver.

“I saw one of them waiting at the Kulleġġ bus stop, and another one in St Julian’s near the Eden Cinema; it seems as though he’s working as a delivery driver for construction materials. I recognised him because one of his eyes is a bit damaged.”

Reylan said that the police told him they were unable to locate the suspects at their official home addresses. When he asked them whether they could arrest them at work, as they did with the man who stabbed his friend, they said it could be possible.

“However, he told me that if I have any information on their whereabouts then I should send him an email. Even though it wasn’t my job to find these men, I tried asking my friends to find out where they were working but unfortunately no one wanted to get involved and risk getting into trouble.”

Reylan, who is still suffering some after-effects of his brutal beating, is urging the police to take his case seriously.

“I want justice and I want these people to get arrested,” he said. “I would understand if they were angry with me and gave me a single punch, but they kicked me while I was down and I almost died that night. They humiliated me and hopefully they will get arrested.”
