Watch: Desirei Grech Visits Birkirkara Monti On First Day As Mayor
Desirei Grech started her first full day as Birkirkara mayor with a trip to her hometown’s monti.
Lovin Malta accompanied the 27-year-old notary through the market, where hawkers, shoppers and residents all stopped to speak to the new mayor.
“As I promised during my election campaign, I will keep on visiting people, even in the streets of Birkirkara if needs be,” Desirei said. “I won’t just stay in the office.”
She pledged to work to strengthen the sense of community in Birkirkara.
“Many residents I spoke to during house visits complained that they don’t feel like they belong here; they feel Birkirkara is more of a transit town that people pass through to get from A to B. However, Birkirkara has a lot of potential and I believe the community can be strengthened.”
Grech was automatically elected as Birkirkara mayor last night after the council failed to agree on who should lead it over the next legislature.
The PN’s nomination of Grech was defeated by the six PL councillors and independent Kaylocke Buhagiar, while the PL’s nomination of Yana Borg Debono Grech was defeated by the six PN councillors and Buhagiar.
Last night, the PL instructed its councillors to support Buhagiar as mayor, but Borg Debono Grech broke ranks and voted against the nomination.
Grech, as the councillor who obtained most votes from the most popular party in Birkirkara, will therefore serve as mayor for the next three months, after which a new vote will be taken.
However, this means that Grech has officially become the PN’s first Birkirkara mayor since 2013.
