Watch: ‘I Felt Your Presence Beside Me’ – Andrew Schembri’s ‘Partner And Friend’ Shares Touching Light Tribute To Young Creative
29-year-old Andrew Schembri left a gaping hole in Malta’s art scene when he tragically died on 29th June… but his friends and collaborators have carried on his legacy, with his Late Interactive co-creator sharing a beautiful tribute fitting of Andrew’s unique talents and soul.
“Andrew was not just a partner and a friend, he was also the person who with his vision and principle profoundly shaped my mindset both as a creator as well as a human being,” his partner-in-art Toni Gialanze wrote on social media yesterday. “His influence was so powerful, it’s like fragments of his brains were forever imprinted on mine. That’s why the work I will create in the future, as in the past, will not just be me. It will be us! Like in this piece…”

“While working on this, I felt your presence beside me,” the touching post continued. “I channeled the knowledge and inspiration that you conveyed to me during our time together.”
“Creating this light design to accompany your forward-thinking and witty sounds, was a deeply emotional experience. Your artistic genius is so dense it can be touched by hand in this song. You pushed and broke boundaries with everything you touched. We remember and celebrate you this way fratell!”
Schembri was a talented artist and musician who worked on a number of musical projects, including top alternative band Brikkuni, but also dabbled in electronic music himself. In fact, the piece featured in this Late Interactive tribute – a reworking of the popular mass song Jekk Qatt Ma Ħassejt played during the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival last month – was his own, a fitting choice for the ode to the “light wizard”
Rest In Power Andrew, and thanks for the countless unique contributions to Malta’s art scene and beyond.
