Pelin Kaya’s sister, Derya, gave a heart-wrenching speech at last night’s vigil on the first anniversary of Pelin’s tragic murder.

“I wish it was me,” she said tearfully into the microphone.

“We are here at the very spot where Pelin took her last breath. I wish it was me.”

“Unfortunately, the incident left some scars that won’t be healed, ever.”

The vigil was held yesterday at 7pm in Gżira, near the site where the brutal incident took place.

Flowers were laid near a memorial plaque of Pelin which includes a message from her family. Derya carefully placed a red gerbera daisy, her sister’s favourite flower.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg, and Turkey’s ambassador to Malta Erdeniz Şen attended the vigil alongside Pelin’s friends, family, and members of the Turkish community in Malta.

Pelin was killed by a man speeding in his car in the first hour of her 30th birthday on 18th January 2023. Following the horrifying incident Jeremie Camilleri was charged with wilful homicide.

During the vigil, Pelin’s family maintained their strong desire for justice, explaining that it’s all that they could hope for right now.

Rest in peace, Pelin
