Two separate fundraising campaigns have raised €500 for Bertu Magro, the elderly Qrendi resident who was fined €215 after his car was towed while he was in hospital.

Foodie plant-based creator Karin Caligari (aka @plantfulina) raised €300 for Bertu within 24 hours and handed them to Bertu on a bench in Qrendi.

Meanwhile, bar owner Smudge Thomson raised a further €200, which she handed to Bertu at a Qrendi establishment.

Bertu appeared emotional in both encounters and embraced the donors who went out of their way to help him out.

This money is over and above the €200 that F Living host Karl Bonaci gave Bertu on his show as a Christmas present. Meanwhile, the Ministry for Active Ageing stepped in to ensure that his €215 fine was reverted due to his case being a genuine one.

Lovin Malta revealed last week that Bertu’s car was towed while he was hospitalised last August to make way for the Santa Marija festivities. The Qrendi local council stood up for him and formally requested that the money be returned to him.
