Watch: Lonely Maltese Man Opens Up On What Christmas Season Makes Him Feel
They say Christmas is the most beautiful time of the year, but that’s certainly not the case for George Micallef.
In a new eye-opening documentary on loneliness produced by the Faculty for Social Wellbeing, Micallef said he finds December the hardest period of the year because love and cheer are constantly in one’s face.
“Sometimes children come and sing in front of my door as part of a choir and I have sometimes told them to sing somewhere else,” he said.
Micallef’s loneliness problem can get so severe that he sometimes closes his windows and balcony because he cannot bear to see and hear people happily going about their daily lives with their loved ones.
Moreover, he said he barely manages to get more than three hours sleep every night and sometimes goes to work as early as 3am simply for some peace and quiet and to exchange a few words with the security guard.
“Life is very hard. I’ve previously climbed to the roof at night but talked myself out of it and climbed back down. However, sometimes I pray for death because perhaps then I will know I am resting.”
The documentary, Il-Ġerћa tas-Solitudni, was produced by WE Media and spearheaded by Peppi Azzopardi. It features several other stories of loneliness and is meant to shine a light on this oft-ignored social problem during the festive season.
