60-year-old Joe Attard was this week informed that his two-month period in a homeless shelter was up. Not having anywhere to go, Joe ended up sleeping in the parapet of a house in the same street.

In an interview with NET News, Joe talked about his horrible experience. “The cold was constant. I felt like I was going to die.” When asked about what he planned on doing the next day, Joe just replied, “What do you want me to do? I don’t have anywhere to go… I’m going to have to sleep outside again.”

Joe carries a small black backpack which is with him day and night. In it is everything he owns. “I have to carry it with me everywhere I go. I have some clothes in there. Everything I own is in this bag, and it’s always with me. If I go anywhere, like a shop or a cafe, the bag needs to be there.”

The woman who found him sleeping in front of her door gave the interviewer some more insight into Joe’s life. He has been admitted into Mount Carmel hospital about six times, and has through the years suffered from various physical and mental issues. He has already suffered from two heart-attacks, and needs to be treated for his worrying blood sugar levels.

“Someone needs to help him. I want someone to help him. Because he’s now going to start sleeping in the streets.” She goes on to explain how Joe Attard is not the only person she’s encountered lately, especially in the area of Fleur De Lys in Birkirkara. “All we see are people walking in the street with their backpacks on their backs, asking for small change, or a coffee.” These people are reportedly desperately looking for shelter in bus stops, cars, and abandoned buildings.
