Maria Formosa, the executive secretary of ALS Malta and the wife of ALS activist Bjorn Formosa, was named Woman of the Year at an award ceremony last night.

The award ceremony was organised by local jewellery brand Mvintage, which shortlisted seven women for the prize and put their names to the public in an online vote.

Besides Maria, Mvintage shortlisted Puttinu Cares President Angele Cuschieri, LGBT+ activist Gabi Calleja, businesswoman Helga Ellul, women’s rights activist Lara Dimitrijevic, actress and Jays of Sunshine founder Maxine Attard, and social media influencer Shelley Caruana.

With around 11,000 votes cast, Maria was named the winner but she had no intention of basking in the glory alone.

After announcing she is sharing the prize with all women who take care of their relatives at home in silence, she invited Angele Cuschieri to share the stage with her.

“I want to share this prize with Angele, a woman I admire who works so much for society and for children with cancer,” Maria said before thanking the public for their support.

Last night was Mvintage’s first Woman of the Year Award, a prize the jewellery brand said it launched to promote female empowerment.

“Female empowerment lies at the core of the brand, so the idea of recognising some of the brilliant women who have been shaping Maltese society flows perfectly with its aim to help women express themselves in their own individual way,” Mvintage said.

Mvintage founder Krystle Penza said the awards are acelebration of the perseverance, hard work and talent of the many women who leave a positive mark on our society.”

The ceremony was attended by some high-profile guests, including the Prime Minister’s wife Lydia Abela.

Well done Maria!
