Watch: ‘Miscarriage Leave Is A Right, Not Luxury’ – Yazmin Helledie Bravely Shares Personal Story

When Yazmin Helledie walked into the emergency department five months ago, she was already in unbearable pain. Minutes later, in the bathroom of the hospital’s emergency unit, she miscarried.
Yazmin bravely shared her experience with miscarriage at a public discussion focussed on miscarriage leave, something the popular influencer believes “should be a right, not a luxury”.
Yazmin admitted to having dreamt of becoming a mother, so upon finding out the news she was pregnant, she and her husband Keith Panelli were over the moon.
They began dreaming of their new life they thought would begin in nine months.
Unfortunately, almost three months into the pregnancy, she discovered that the baby – whom they warmly referred to as Buzz – had stopped growing at six weeks. She had what’s known as a silent miscarriage.
What followed was a waiting game, Yazmin and Keith waited for the physical process to begin naturally and after a week it did. Severe pain and lots of blood marked the start of her physical miscarriage.

After she endured physical trauma, the process of mental healing – for the both of them – began.
“I couldn’t imagine if he wasn’t with me to face this trauma.”
Being self-employed, Yazmin arranged with her clients and was able to pause working, something she said she was “very lucky” to do.
Her husband was also fortunate to be working at a considerate company to give him the time he needed.
This was necessary, Yazmin explained, as they needed each other to overcome the worst of the trauma.
“However, this isn’t the reality for everyone.”
