Watch: ‘My Daughter Deserves More’ – How A Rare Diagnosis Sparked A Movement Of Inclusion

A Maltese mother shared the inspiring story behind her NGO dedicated to providing holistic care for children with disabilities.
Claudette Curmi, founder of Embrace Diversity and mother of two, explained that discovering her two-month-old daughter had a rare condition was the beginning of a path dedicated to helping children like her.
“When Kaya was born, everyone thought she was born with no issues, however, after two months we realised she wasn’t developing normally,” Claudette said in a candid video uploaded to social media.
Not long after, Kaya’s parents discovered she had a very rare condition, “one which she practically founded”.
There is no one like her in Malta, Claudette explained, and there are only around 20 recorded cases of her condition worldwide.
“However, I believe that over time, research will only increase and maybe there will be more help for her in the future.”
Due to issues that the family was facing, Kaya had to stop going to school and she ended up spending a lot of her time at home.
“From that day, I decided that my daughter doesn’t deserve to be stuck at home,” Claudette recounted.
She began searching for places that could take care of Kaya but at that time, there was nowhere she could go. “And so we decided to start our own thing for Kaya and children like her.”
Claudette wanted to create a space to teach and take care of children facing similar struggles to her daughter: “I wanted to create a special space where they can find love and enjoy their lives.”
And six years ago, Claudette did exactly that. It all started in a smaller house in Mellieħa and over these past four years, the organisation bought a house in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq where they offer a lot of important, holistic services.
She went on to wish for the people who follow this incredible initiative to “think of us too” by supporting Embrace Diversity. This can be done through donations or voluntary work, “the more we have, the more we can help these children.”
