Watch: New Maltese Play Offers Tailor-Made Shows For Children With Severe Autism

In a first for Malta, a theatre production will take place this weekend offering special tailor-made and individualised shows for children with severe autism.

Snowglobe will be performed by four actors, including two with Down syndrome, to a single audience member on the autism spectrum at a time.

Aware that neurodivergent people respond differently to a range of stimuli, such as lighting and music, producers at Inclusive Theatre want to create tailor-made performances for these children.

They sent an invitation to parents of children with autism, selected 15 of them, and met them in advance to try out scenes and gauge their response to certain stimuli.

Snowglobe will therefore put on 15 shows, over a span of three days, with stimuli tweaked every time to cater for the specific audience members.

Performances will take place inside a ‘snow globe’ and audience members will be free to sit wherever they want, touch whatever they want, and express themselves as they see fit.

“The idea is to give them as much space as possible and provide them with a relaxed performance,” producer Brandon Terribile told Lovin Malta. “As artists who create immersive shows, we want to get a message across that the magic of theatre should be accessible to everyone. Although there are several interesting shows that are adapted to people with different abilities, we wanted to be even more specific.”

“God willing we will continue doing putting on these shows next year so that more people will be able to see them.”

The shows are part of the ŻiguŻajg festival for children and youths and are completely free of charge.
