“I worked three different jobs,” the woman explained, saying that the company she worked for started laying off people.
Although a week later she found a new job, she was soon fired from her new workplace after management found out that she had fallen pregnant.
“I was on probation at the new job, and when they found out I was pregnant, I was fired,” the woman said.
The woman went on to explain that although she had some money saved up in the bank, she had to use it to pay the rent.
“Sometimes I didn’t eat just to afford paying the rent,” she continued. Eventually, the couple no longer afforded to pay for a roof over their heads and ended up on the streets.
The woman also admitted that at times, she had to sleep on benches or on the beach.
“When it was raining, we didn’t know where to go,” she said, admitting that she sometimes slept in abandoned bathrooms because she feared that a passerby might harm her and her baby.
“My biggest fear wasn’t that I had nowhere to stay or that I couldn’t eat, but that I was hurting the baby in the process,” the woman added.
“People are quick to judge – many assume that if you are sleeping outside, you must have done something wrong to end up in that situation,” she explained, adding that the pair did not have any drug dependancy, or any addiction whatsoever.
She described the uncomfortable experience of having to ask her friends to shower at their house- a painful experience for both her and the person she would ask for help.
Things however, took a turn for the better when the woman went for a checkup at Mater Dei.
The doctors informed her that she was malnourished, and after explaining her precarious situation, the doctors referred her to YMCA, a homelessness shelter that helped the couple and their newborn immensely.
The woman shared that if it hadn’t been for the shelter’s help and encouragement. she would have given up the baby for adoption.
She admitted that her one wish is to live as family with her partner and daughter in a proper home.
