All’s well that ends well.

Things have taken a turn for the better for Bertu, an elderly Qrendi resident who was fined €215 after his car was towed while he was in hospital during the Santa Marija festivities last August.

After Lovin Malta shared Bertu’s story, the Ministry for Active Ageing got in touch with him and sent a representative to his home to speak to him. After asserting that his case was a genuine one, they reached an agreement with the authorities to refund him the €215.

But that was not all.

F Living’s Karl Bonaci invited Bertu onto his show yesterday, where he presented him with an additional €200 present as well as a €100 voucher from Wellbee’s Supermarket’s In House Butchers.

“I want you to put that episode behind you and spend this Christmas as you deserve to spend it,” Bonaci explained. “The €215 fine will be returned to you but you will also get an extra €200 from this station because we wanted to cheer you up a bit this Christmas.”

Bertu started crying, taken aback by the sudden display of generosity.

“Don’t cry, we want you to be happy,” Bonaci told him.

Qrendi mayor David Schembri, who was also on the show, thanked the Ministry for Active Ageing, everyone who showed their support, and bar owner Smudge Thomson for organising a fundraiser for Bertu in St Paul’s Bay.

“It’s indeed the festive season but there are good people out there,” he said.
