Watch: ‘Stop Justifying Wrongdoing’ – Author Rips Into Maltese Voters’ Partisan Attitudes

In a razor-sharp takedown of the state of Maltese politics, a local author warned that the status quo is unlikely to change if voters keep justifying wrongdoing for partisan reasons.

“If a mass of people exalts wrongdoing, what do you expect the corrupt to do? They’re going to tell themselves that this is what the people want,” Ricky Caruana, author of Resonance: A Glimpse of Infinity, said on Sayan Cassar’s podcast.

“If they are immediately discarded by the public, their successors will think twice before screwing you over. But in Malta, if someone does something wrong, government supporters will come out and say ‘Did you forget what you did 15 years ago? Or 30 years ago?’”

“You need to stop justifying wrongdoing from both sides. For politics to start working properly, leaders need to realise that people are no longer fools.”

“However, the moment they see you attacking others and saying things like ‘You’re one to talk, do you know what your minister did back in 2008?’  they’ll say ‘Amazing, he’s a soldier of steel’.”

“No wonder they call you a soldier of steel. They are screwing you in front of your eyes and you’re out here defending them. What more do you need? These fools are your best lawyers. So the Matrix does well to contain these stupid people because that’s what they deserve.”

Caruana argued that politicians will quickly turn over a new leaf once they realise the electorate aren’t so forgiving.

“I never blame the government; it does what it do because voters allow them to. If the majority of people want righteous politicians, they will all become like Buddha and Jesus, because ultimately politicians do what people want them to. That’s how things work.”

“I won’t attack the Matrix or the government but I will attack the man in the street, because he is the fool who gives them power election after election, no matter who is in power.”
