Young activist Rhythm Garg won the Student of the Year award at yesterday’s FreeHour’s Youth Awards.

Rhythm, 15, was born in India but moved to Malta with her family some ten years ago and learned the Maltese language.

She recently addressed Parliament in a special climate change session, where she spoke out about how Malta’s air quality has declined over the past decade.

Rhythm spoke to Lovin Malta about how she considers Malta to be her home and feels sad when she sees people telling her to “go back to her country”.

“I wouldn’t even dream of writing something like that; what does writing something so racist say about you as a person?”

“Moreover, when you tell me to ‘go back’ to my country… this is my country. I see Malta as my country and my home. India is my country, but so is Malta. I think I am part of Malta and people have welcomed me as one of them.”

Well done Rhythm!
