Watch: ‘The Sober Runner’ – Former Drug Addict To Take On 100-Kilometre Run For Caritas
Miguel Mifsud, dubbed “The Sober Runner”, will soon be taking on a 100-kilometre run along Malta’s coast for the rehabilitation centre which helped turn his life around following a 20-year long drug dependency.
On 7th April, Miguel will start his feat early in the morning at 4am Ħad-Dingli and run across Mġarr, Għajn Tuffieħa, Xemxija and along the Maltese coast, until he arrives at his final destination – Caritas Malta’s San Blas Therapeutic Community Centre in Żebbuġ.
Miguel, 44, spent some time at this very rehabilitation centre, having been dependent on a number of drugs, including heroin, ecstasy, and cocaine, for about 20 years.
In his youth, Miguel played with Malta’s national football team, and had led Paola’s Hibernians to a premier league victory. “As soon as I reached my goal, I started using drugs to reward myself,” Miguel said in an interview for Caritas.
“From death to life”- this is how I would describe my life, and this is all thanks to Caritas who were always ready to embrace me, arms wide open,” Miguel admitted.“I had lost everything and today, thanks to all those who believe in me, particularly my wife and kids, I have the opportunity to give back to Caritas Malta, who always helped me so much,” he continued.
Caritas director Anthony Gatt called Miguel and his running coach Fabio Spiteri “role models”, adding that this charity run is not just a means to gather funds, but it is “also a personal win” for Miguel over drugs.
Gatt went on to invite others to join Miguel’s “noble” feat, be it physically, or even via donation. A bank account was specifically opened for this cause, under the name Giving Back Run.
