WATCH: Throwback To When Injured Policeman Simon Schembri Saved A Woman Who Had Gone Into Labour In Her Car
Xarabank has unearthed a heartwarming clip from five years ago in which Simon Schembri, the policeman who was severely injured in this week’s shocking hit-and-run in Luqa, recounts his voluntary decision to help a woman who had gone into labour in her car.
The pregnant woman was being driven to hospital by her husband to give birth when she suddenly went into labour. With the roads blocked by traffic, the husband parked the car haphazardly on a bus stop and called for emergency help. The distress call reached Simon Schembri on his police radio and the policeman dashed down to help without waiting for orders from his superiors.
“I saw the husband panicking and circling around the car on his phone and his wife screaming inside the car that the baby was coming out,” Schembri recounted. “I genuinely thought she was about to give birth inside the car, so I held her hand to try and alleviate her pain. Eventually, I took the decision to drive them to hospital. I left my motorbike where it was, got into the drivers’ seat so that the husband could sit next to his wife, and drove the couple to hospital.”
Schembri had to have an arm amputated after he was mowed down in Luqa this week by a 17-year-old who the police officer had attempted to stop to check his driving license. Police officers yesterday gathered in force in Valletta in a demonstration to express solidarity with their injured colleague and to demand better work conditions.
