Watch: UK Amazed By Maltese People’s Generosity Towards Puttinu Project – Puttinu Cares CEO and President Recount British Reactions

Buying a plot of land in central London and developing it into a large building is a behemoth task which requires a lot of time and even more money… and when the whole thing is coming from the charitable donations of a tiny island halfway across the continent, it might be difficult for some people to even grasp.

That’s exactly what happened with the neighbours of Puttinu Cares’ latest endeavour in the UK, with the president and CEO of the children’s cancer support group recounting what a surreal experience it was to meet them.

“Part of this long process involved meeting the neighbours” Puttinu Cares President Angele Cuschieri smiled, recounting the story to Lovin Malta. “They had a lot of questions.”

“One of their questions was, ‘How is it possible that, from a country with such a small population, you’ll manage to finish such an expensive building?'” Angele said. “After all, this is going to end up costing close to €25 million.”

“But we told them, ‘No, the people of Malta and Gozo are helping, through their donations’,” Angele recounted, with CEO Rennie Zerafa chiming in to say, “They couldn’t even understand it! Because in their own country, they have to pay for the hospital accommodation.”

“You try to make your country proud in another country, and that’s why we’re already listed as an NGO in the UK as well,” Rennie said of Puttinu Cares’ incredible achievements over the years.

Of course, nothing in life comes easy, especially when it’s a big task such as this. In fact, one of the biggest challenges is a financial one, with all the maintenance involved taking a toll, especially during the winter months.

“We had to close some apartments because of repair works, we’re down from 26 to 24, and they’re always full,” Angele explained.

“If you had to tell us how we got all these funds, where they came from, it would be the incomparable sweetness of the Maltese and Gozitan people,” Rennie said, smiling.

This is Puttinu Cares’ third building in the UK… but awesome achievements like this are only possible thanks to events such as the massive annual fundraising marathons. This year’s edition will run on Good Friday, 29th March.
