On 14th April, Andonia Mallia arrived home early after a days work to enjoy a quiet evening with her fiancee watching a TV show. Her life was about to change forever.

That evening, a horrific accident on Triq il-Buqana claimed the lives of her mother and sister, Graziella and Fallon, while also leaving her nanna and Fallon’s son seriously injured in an incident that shocked the country.

Six months later, the wounds of the tragic loss can be seen in the family they left behind.

In a tearful and heartbreaking interview with NET Live, Andonia and her father George detailed the initial unfathomable shock at the news and the struggle with the grief that followed.

“[My fiancee’s] mother phoned to say she saw an article about a terrible car accident, and that the vehicle looked like my mother’s, but we couldn’t possibly be sure.”

“I kept on trying to call my mother, my sister, and my Nanna, but there was no answer,” Andonia said.

Fear, uncertainty, and lack of contact plagued Andonoia until she rushed to the emergency department at Mater Dei upon hearing the news that her family were in the accident.

“When I arrived, a lot of doctors came up to me, and I knew something wasn’t right. They waited for my father to arrive and they gave us the news.”

George, husband to Graziella and father to Fallon,  left devastated by the loss went to see Graziella and Fallon in the morgue.

“I went to in to go see them, my daughter asleep with a smile, and my wife looking at me,” George said, holding back the tears.

The severe loss, however, had to be quickly forgotten, with their attention turning to the seriously injured grandmother and grandchild.

Thankfully both emerged from the accident healthy.

“I didn’t know what to tell him, he lost two mothers in an instance,” he said.

“He knows it’s not the same. There are low points, but it’s also made him mature at the same,” a tearful Andonia said.

None of them had to chance to say their goodbyes.

“The last thing I said was just a simple ‘ciao’ as I left for work in the morning,” George said.

Their deaths have left their mark, with Andonia describing how the rest of the family are now living a different life.

“I don’t make long term plans anymore like they used to, I just day by day,” Andonia said.

She knows her family are still with her. Andonia got married a few weeks ago, and she knew her mother and sister were by her side when she walked into the church.

To cap it off, she sang a beautiful rendition of  ‘Angels’ to celebrate their lives.
