Watch: Young Maltese Student Starts Fundraiser To Help Him Battle Blindness Condition

An 18-year-old electrical engineering student has urged the public to help him purchase crucial medication to help him treat his medical condition that could lead to blindness.

Matthias Zarb Szabó said he started to notice a distinct blurring in his right eye soon after he started studying at the University of Malta, and the condition has now advanced to a stage when he can no longer read or write.

He has been diagnosed with LHON (Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy), a genetic condition characterized by bilateral, painless subacute loss of central vision during young adult life.

Matthias said the best course of action is to undertake a medical treatment plan in the form of Idebenone tablets for at least two years. However, as the medication isn’t provided for free by the Maltese health authorities, his family would have to fork out an estimated  €250,000.

So far an unnamed private entity has covered two months of his medication but a Gofundme page has been created to try and cover the rest of the two-year period.

“I am pleading for help urgently from anyone and everyone who can help me raise the funds needed to purchase this medication,” Matthias wrote.

“My quality of life depends on this medication and I would be eternally grateful to anyone who decides to help me, no matter how big or small your contributions are. I believe with your support you can help me and stop my central vision from deteriorating even further.”

Would you like to help Matthias regain his vision?
