Nick Mercieca just gave everyone a lesson in strength (both literally and physically) and resilience proving it’s possible to overcome even the most limiting of obstacles. Nick, who is just 12 years old, practices karate despite being a wheelchair user.

In case you needed any convincing, check out this video published by TVM.

The video, uploaded by his coach Joe Tanti, shows Nick completing six push ups (that’s five more than I can do) while his legs are completely suspended in the air.

Nick was born with spina bifida, a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly, that has affected his legs as well as his eyes.

Despite this, he is following his passion and has been practicing karate for the past six years and has reached the Brown Belt level – that’s two away from becoming a Black Belt!

In 2018, Nick travelled to Belgium where he gave a para-karate demonstration and was the first athlete to represent the Malta Karate Federation in a para-karate competition, and win!
