‘Younger Me Would Be Proud’: Maltese Personal Trainer Opens Up About 35kg Fitness Transformation

A Maltese personal trainer has opened up about his own fitness transformation and how he managed to find a balance between health and leisure in life.

Uploading two images side by side comparing where he started off and where he’s at now, Mark Grech highlighted how he “understands that not everyone is born an athlete” – and how this mentality actually helps him to train others who are not athletes by default.

While the two photos shared were taken eleven years apart, Grech had lost 35 kg over the course of two years when he had first embarked on his fitness journey.

“When I reflect on my transformation I feel like the ‘all or nothing’ mentality and the initial motivation only lasted a few months. The real change started happening when I accepted that things take time,” Grech told Lovin Malta.

“I used to tell myself I just need to get 0.1% better every day and I’ll get there. Of course, I still feel like there’s more to achieve but I’m in no rush to get it, the journey is the reward in itself so find a way to enjoy it,” he said.

“If you’re about to start this journey my advice would be: don’t stress, remember why you started, and never give up.”

In his initial Facebook post, which attracted the attention and support of many people, Grech highlighted how he managed to find balance in the things he enjoyed doing.

He opened up on how when he was growing up, he was never one to have a six-pack or to come first in a sports competition.

“In fact, I wouldn’t have considered myself a ‘fit’ person at all. When I was younger, I was more interested in playing World of Warcraft all day, listening to Metallica, drinking jager-bombs, and eating burgers at 4am after a night out,” he detailed.

“Nowadays I still play the occasional video game, listen to heavy metal, and I still indulge in burgers. Point is, I have found a balance in the things I enjoy doing… and still make time for fitness,” he said.

“I’d say the younger me would be proud. Because I didn’t change myself but instead evolved to accommodate a healthier life.”

He continued to say that this is precisely the reason why people train with him – because he understands that not everyone is born an athlete, and not everyone will break records and have the perfect body.

“But everyone deserves a chance at a healthier life.”
