Late this afternoon, three days after the attack actually happened, Facebook admitted that attackers have gained access to more than 50 million accounts around the world.

The social media platform revealed that attackers could use the accounts as if they were their own. As a precaution, Facebook is now logging around 90 million users out of their accounts — that includes apps which you have logged in using Facebook.

The hacking happened on Tuesday 25th of September, when the social media website’s engineering team discovered a security breach affecting millions of accounts around the world. It is thought that the hackers have found and used to their advantage a vulnerability in the website’s code. Access tokens for the site were stolen — these tokens are those digital keys that keep you logged into the site, not having to re-enter your password every single time you need to access your account.

That means that your private messages and profile could’ve been accessed by the perpetrators. Facebook said that it has fixed the fault and is n touch with the law enforcement regarding the issue.

About 90 million users will be logged out of their account, so if that happens don’t sweat. It’s a safety precaution implemented by the social media platform.

It is unknown who was behind this attack, however your best bet would be to change your login credentials just in case.
