Watch: 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Kills Over 500 People In Turkey And Syria
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake left over 550 people dead and hundreds injured after the tremor led to devastating effects in Turkey and Syria.
According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency, the quake’s epicentre was situated in the town of Pazarcik in the province of Kahramanmaras.
The massive quake was followed by a devastating 6.7 magnitude tremor around 10 minutes later, as well as more than a dozen other aftershocks.
The earthquake has caused devasting effects, causing widespread destruction across Syria and Turkey, with many buildings having collapsed as a result.
According to Sky News, within just 30 minutes, the death toll went from 360 to 568 within government areas. It’s been reported that the tremor led to more deaths due to it having occurred during the night.
According to the Turkish vice president, the southeastern Hatay Airport has been closed due to damage caused by the disaster, while civilian flights to and from Gaziantep Airport have been suspended.
