At Least 10 Killed In Major Russian Attack On Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure
At least 10 people were killed in a massive Russian attack targeting energy infrastructure in Ukraine.
The overnight attack consisted of 120 missiles and 90 drones and hit multiple regions across the country, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Among cities hit are the capital Kyiv, Donetsk, Lviv, Mykolaiv and Odesa in what was described as the largest military assault since September.
The thermal energy plants of Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, sustained serious damage from these strikes resulting in emergency blackouts.
This is the eighth large-scale attack targeting Ukraine’s energy facilities this year, DTEK said in a statement adding that its plants have been attacked more than 190 times since the Russia began its military campaign in Ukraine in 2022.
Ukrainian neighbours like Poland and Hungary are now on high alert with Poland ordering fighter jets to patrol its own airspace as a security precaution.
These attacks come shortly after Donald Trump was confirmed as the US’ next President. During his campaign, Trump often said one of his priorities is to end the war which he considers to be a drain on US military resources. Ukraine relies on the US as it’s largest supplier of military aid and weapons however, the world is unsure about how Trump intends to end this major conflict.
Just yesterday, Zelensky said he is sure that the war will end sooner than it would have otherwise once Trump assumes office, saying he had a constructive exchange with the soon-to-be president shortly after his victory was confirmed.
