Giorgia Meloni, head of the Fratelli d’Italia political party, is set to become Italy’s first female Prime Minister after claiming victory in the general election.

Provisional results gave Fratelli d’Italia some 26% of the vote, with her right-wing coalition – that also includes Matteo Salvini’s Lega and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia – winning around 41-45% of the vote.

Meanwhile, a leftwing coalition led by Enrico Letta won between 25.5%-29.5% of the vote, while the Five Star Movement won 13.5%-17.5%.

A Rai TV exit poll indicates that Meloni’s coalition will be absolutely dominant in both the Chamber and the Senate, with 227-257 out of 400 seats in the Chamber and 111-131 out of 200 in the Senate. Meanwhile, the left is only expected to hold 78-98 seats in the Chamber and 33-53 in the Senate.

Turnout was around 63.91%, a record low and nine points down from 2018, with voting levels particularly poor in Sicily and other southern regions.

Meloni said the people of Italy had given her party a clear mandate to run the government and pledged to govern for all Italians.

“This is a night of pride for Brothers of Italy, but it is a starting point, not a finish line,” she told her supporters.

“If we are called upon to govern this nation, we will do so for all Italians, with the aim of uniting the people, of exalting what unites them rather than what divides them. “We will not betray your trust.”

Meloni’s success has sparked concern across the continent seeing as Fratelli d’Italia had risen out of a post-war movement that emerged from Benito Mussolini’s Fascist Party.

However, she has softened her image ahead of the election, diluting her party’s anti-EU rhetoric and emphasising her support for Ukraine.
