Has The Art World Gone Bananas? Viral Duct-Taped Banana Artwork Sells For $6.2 Million At Sotheby’s
In a surreal twist that’s left everyone talking, a banana duct-taped to a wall has sold for an eye-popping $6.2 million at Sotheby’s in New York.
The artwork, titled “Comedian“ and created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was purchased by Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun, who outbid six others to secure the piece.
Speaking after the auction, Sun made a quirky promise: “I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience.”
The banana itself reportedly cost just $0.35 earlier in the day, according to the New York Times, but the piece’s value lies in its concept. It even comes with instructions on how to replace the fruit once it inevitably rots—a process that has already played out multiple times.
Since debuting in 2019, “Comedian” has sparked global debate about the meaning of art, travelling to exhibitions worldwide.
It’s even been eaten twice: once by a performance artist in Miami and more recently by a South Korean art student in Seoul, with both bananas promptly replaced.
