It’s Finally Here – The Deepest, Sharpest View Of The Universe Ever Captured By Nasa

Just 198 days since it launched on Christmas Day 2021 and a million miles of travelling later, Nasa’s most powerful telescope to ever take flight has returned its first image… and it’s as groundbreaking and historic as you’d expect.

In a special televised broadcast aired yesterday, US President Joe Biden revealed the first image from the James Webb Space Telescope, describing it as “the deepest, sharpest infrared view of the universe to date”.

With Nasa’s flagship and revolutionary telescope, this striking image is just the first of many which are expected to come in the coming days.

The James Webb Space Telescope is massively expected to change and shape much of what we know and have learnt about space so far.

“It’s almost overwhelmingly beautiful, knowing that the photons you’re imaging here have been in space, on the way to this camera, for over 13 billion years,” NASA’s associate administrator of the science mission directorate Thomas Zurbuchen said.

Just last weekend, a test image from JWST broke the record for the deepest look into the universe – but the recent images are just something else, with the crisp image showcasing thousands of colourful galaxies.

These images also bring back memories of another iconic deep space photo when the Hubble Space Telescope stared at a seemingly empty patch of sky for 100 hours back in 1995 and revealed the iconic galaxy-filled photo which has served as the backdrop to countless documentaries and posters.

“Now, we enter a new phase of scientific discovery,” US Vice President Kamala Harris, chair of the National Space Council, said yesterday.

“It will enhance what we know about the origins of our universe, our solar system, and possibly life itself.”
