Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been evacuated after a smoke bomb was thrown in his direction during a public event today.

A man has been arrested at the scene in Wakayama, where the Prime Minister was due to give a speech.

Kishida was visiting the prefecture on Saturday to support his ruling party’s candidate in a local election.

However, just as he was due to speak, an explosion occurred and he was evacuated. No injuries were reported.

The motives of the suspect are unknown at this time.
