Johnny Depp Wins Defamation Case As Jury’s Verdict Unanimously Rules Against Amber Heard
Johnny Depp has won the defamation case, as the jury’s verdict has unanimously ruled against Amber Heard.
The jury has unanimously found Heard’s statement to be “false, defamatory and intended with malice”. He has been awarded $15 million.
Heard was also awarded $2 million in her countersuit, finding that she was defamed when Depp’s lawyer claimed her allegations of abuse were a “hoax”.
Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife and actress Amber Heard for libel over an op-ed piece that she wrote for the Washington Post back in 2018.
Within the piece, Heard had made implications that she was a victim of domestic abuse, though she never mentioned Depp’s name.
Throughout the article, Heard described herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse” which also led to triggering many people that have dealt with domestic violence.
Depp has argued that he was, in fact, the one that was being abused, detailing accounts of physical abuse, even detailing how Heard had severed his little finger with a glass bottle.
His career also suffered greatly due to the implications, even making it unlikely to keep his spot in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean.
Heard’s career also took a blow, with a worldwide petition reaching more than four million signatures to remove her from the upcoming Aquaman 2.
Throughout the six-week-long trial, the jurors of the case heard about details of the two’s relationship extensively, as both actors took the stand. And many witnesses also rose up to the occasion, with Kate Moss also appearing on Depp’s side.
After Depp sued her for $50 million following her allegations, Heard countersued him for $100 million.
