Pope Francis has broken his silence with a heartfelt audio message from his hospital bed, thanking well-wishers for their prayers amid growing concerns about his health.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalised for nearly three weeks due to severe respiratory issues, addressed St. Peter’s Square on Thursday night in a pre-recorded message played before the nightly recitation of the rosary.

“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers for my health from the Square, I accompany you from here. May God bless you and the Virgin protect you. Thank you,” the Pope said in Spanish, his voice slow and breathless as he paused frequently to take deep breaths.

His words were met with applause from the crowd, as it marked the first time the Pope’s voice had been heard since he was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on 14th February.

While the Vatican has continued to provide updates on his condition—confirming that he is stable and responding to treatment—the Pope has not been seen on photo or video since his hospitalisation.

His doctors remain cautious, describing his prognosis as “guarded”, following episodes of acute respiratory failure earlier this week.

Despite his health struggles, the Vatican confirmed that he continues to work between treatments and physiotherapy sessions.

As the Pope remains under medical supervision, his supporters around the world continue to pray for his recovery.
