Maltese Journalist Wins Pulitzer As Part Of Panama Papers Team
Matthew Caruana Galizia – a Maltese journalist working for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting along with his team.
The team have been recognised for their work on the Panama Papers exposé, for which up to 300 reporters across the world worked uncovered “the hidden infrastructure and global scale of offshore tax havens“.
One year ago Caruana Galizia spoke to Lovin Malta about his experience as one of three data miners from ICIJ exposing Panama Papers, working on one of the biggest international leaks we’ve seen in recent years.
“The most important thing right now is that we’re empowering people with knowledge that has been kept hidden from them,” Caruana Galizia remarked about his work on the story. “I come from an engineering background and went into journalism because I thought we could change the way it’s done. And we did.”
Caruana Galizia studied journalism at City University London, Univeristy of Amsterdam, and Danmarks Medie- og Journalisthøjskole. Before joining ICIJ he worked some of the most prestigious companies in the industry including FT Labs and the World Economic Forum.
He can now add possibly the most coveted journalism award in the world to his name (and CV). Talk about having a good week.
