Emergency workers have confirmed the successful rescue of all 12 Thai boys and their coach after a harrowing 18 days stuck in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex.

The world watched with bated breath as each boy was pulled out slowly and meticulously over the last few days until earlier today when the entire Wild Boars football team was removed from the cave.

The 13 Thai nationals have been at the centre of efforts from some of the most advanced and experienced divers in the world, with Navy Seals from all over the world brought in to help out – including two Malta-based scuba divers who are currently still in Thailand.

While the boys and their coach have made it out, the mission is still ongoing, with three Thai Navy Seals and a doctor remaining in the cave. They are expected to emerge later today.

The world teamed up to rescue the trapped football team

All sorts of efforts were considered during the final daring rescue of the team that involved the boys donning scuba gear themselves as they swam out of treacherous, sometimes barely half-a-metre wide tunnels.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk even developed and offered a small one-person submersible cylinder that could be used to transfer one child at a time. While they ended up not going for that innovative option, the Prime Minister of Thailand personally thanked Elon Musk for his offer.

After being rescued today, the boys and their 25-year-old coach were immediately airlifted to a Thai hospital for treatment.

Doctors have advised that the boys need at least a week under observation

A Thai physician, Jesada Chokedamrongsuk, was reported as saying the boys were in good moods and were feeling “cheerful”.

The boys were all found to have low temperatures when they first arrived at the hospital, with two of them, aged between 14 and 16, showing possible signs of pneumonia. They will now be kept in isolation until they are fully certified, even though some of the Thai boys have been able to see their parents through glass windows in the last couple of days.

Though they’ve been requesting food like fried chicken, they are being kept on a diet of diluted porridge, bread, and some chocolate.

The team was invited to watch the FIFA World Cup final this coming Sunday, but were forced to turn it down after doctors ordered them to remain in hospital for at least a week.
